What does a “Sustainable Development Officer” do at the UN?
As a Sustainable Development Officer, you will be at the forefront of the UN’s initiatives to promote sustainable development goals across various sectors within delegated authority. Your responsibilities will involve designing, implementing, and evaluating projects that address critical sustainable development challenges. You need to plan, facilitate and consolidate evidence-based analysis of the status of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), providing substantive advice to management, particularly on elements pertaining to SDG Acceleration, economic transformation agenda and SDG financing. You are required to coordinate the development of a new generation of an integrated SDG programming cycle (including development of roadmaps, Common Country Analysis (CCA) and UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) and others), in support of a shared understanding by the UNCT of sustainable development trends, challenges and opportunities in programme countries, through collaborating with a diverse range of stakeholders, from governmental bodies to civil society organizations. Your expertise in data collection and analysis, project management, and efficient communication will be essential in navigating complex tasks and fostering impactful partnerships.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in sustainable development, economics, public policy, public administration, finance, natural resources management, engineering, law, social sciences, or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, with a focus on policy-oriented work in a broad range of sustainable development issues. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or a related area is desirable. Experience working with international development organizations or multilateral initiatives is an advantage.
Language: Have at least an intermediate level of English in all four areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Knowledge, skills, and capabilities: You should have expertise in sustainable development, data analysis, project management, communication, and teamwork, essential for managing complex tasks and collaborating with multiple stakeholders in the sustainable development field. In-depth knowledge and ability to apply sustainable development theories, concepts, and approaches. Proven skills in conducting independent research and international sustainable development frameworks (such as SDGs), determining the suitability, validity, and accuracy of data from various sources, and developing effective data collection methods. Capable of stakeholder engagement for multi-sectoral partnerships and analyzing and interpreting data to support decision-making processes and effectively communicating the results to management.
