What does a “Human Resources Officer” do at the UN?
As a Human Resources Officer, you will be instrumental in managing human resources operations and supporting the development of the UN’s most valuable asset—its people. Your responsibilities will include talent management, employee relations, and advising on human resources policies, benefits, and allowances. You will develop and implement talent acquisition strategies aligned with organizational goals, collaborate with department heads to forecast hiring needs, and prepare job classification analyses. Additionally, you will provide guidance to hiring managers on job design and recruitment strategies, manage the entire recruitment cycle, and ensure compliance with UN staff selection policies. Your role will also involve implementing workforce diversity initiatives, analyzing recruitment metrics to optimize talent acquisition, and supervising Human Resources Assistants in administrative transactions. By enhancing employer branding and ensuring a positive candidate experience, your expertise in human resources management and data analytics will be crucial in optimizing workforce planning and promoting workforce diversity within the organization.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in human resources management, business or public administration, social sciences, education, or a related area. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.
Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in human resources management, administration, or a related area. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or a related field is desirable. Experience in talent management, employee relations, organizational development, and working with talent management systems is an advantage.
Language: Have at least an intermediate level of English in all four areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking).
Knowledge, skills, and capabilities: You should have proficiency in human resources management, policy interpretation, staff development, and analytical abilities. Ability to effectively managing HR operations, talent management, and advising on policies, benefits, and allowances. Strong understanding of human resources policies, practices, and procedures, ability to apply them in an organizational setting. Skills in identifying issues, formulating opinions, and making recommendations. Strong communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills in team settings. Ability to analyze and interpret data to support decision-making and communicate findings to management. Proficiency in using HR information systems and tools. Proficiency in workforce planning and diversity management.
