What does an “Auditor” do at the UN? 

As an Auditor, you will play a crucial role in the UN’s commitment to transparency and good governance. You will lead audits and special reviews of large and complex operations, preparing risk-based audits in accordance with UN’s Office of Internal Oversight Services. Your responsibilities will include conducting thorough audits, assessing financial controls, and evaluating compliance with policies and regulations. You will supervise and coach staff throughout the audit process, empowering junior team members to participate actively. Collecting and analyzing data to identify trends, you will provide insights through reports and presentations using data visualization methods. Your expertise will guide the organization in documenting, evaluating, and testing systems and controls to ensure compliance, reliability, and effective resource use. Additionally, you will develop findings and recommendations, monitor implementation, and evaluate staff performance, all while fostering a culture of accountability and enhancing operational efficiency.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in business administration, finance, accounting, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA), or equivalent is desirable. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.

Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible professional experience in audit, finance, accounting, administration, statistics, computer science, or a related area. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or a related field is desirable. Experience in conducting international audits or working within large organizations is an advantage.

Language: Have at least an intermediate level of English in all four areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Knowledge, skills, and capabilities: You should have expertise in auditing and internal controls, combined with strong supervisory abilities, analytical and data interpretation skills, and effective communication, is essential to ensure audits are conducted efficiently. Knowledge of auditing standards and practices, as well as applicable financial rules and procedures, is critical. Proficiency in project management and the ability to propose corrective measures are important for addressing issues identified during audits. The ability to identify issues, formulate opinions, present conclusions and recommendations, and analyze and interpret data in support of decision-making is necessary. Strong communication skills are also required to convey audit findings and recommendations to management effectively. Proficiency in risk management frameworks and compliance auditing.
