What does an “Information Systems Officer” do at the UN? 

As an Information Systems Officer, you will be at the forefront of planning, designing, developing, and maintaining the UN's computer information systems. Your responsibilities will include managing projects involving feasibility studies and systems analysis, ensuring data security, managing enterprise-level systems, and providing technical support to users. You will develop detailed specifications and user documentation, synchronize and integrate systems for enhanced situational awareness, and provide expert advice on complex systems. Additionally, you will maintain and upgrade existing systems, organize unit testing, draft policies and guidelines, track project progress, and facilitate communication between your entity and its clients. Your expertise in systems analysis and data management will be crucial in optimizing performance, supporting decision-making processes, and providing professional leadership to project teams. You will also collect and analyze data to identify trends and insights, using data visualization methods to enhance planning and reporting.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in computer science, information systems, mathematics, statistics, or a related field. A first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programmes in data analytics, business analytics, or data science is an advantage.

Experience: A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the planning, design, development, implementation, and maintenance of computer information systems or related areas. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or a related field is desirable. Experience in managing enterprise-level systems for large organizations is an advantage.

Language: Have at least an intermediate level of English in all four areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking).

Knowledge, skills, and capabilities: You should have expertise in systems development and analysis, project management, data security, and technical troubleshooting. Skills in client relations management and data analysis will further enhance your ability to manage and maintain systems. A strong knowledge of information technology and information management—particularly in systems analysis, database design, and programming—is essential. Proficiency in high-level programming languages, structured/object-oriented design, relational systems, scripting, and query languages is necessary, along with expertise in document design, hardware/software requirements, and execution protocols. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, including the development and implementation of moderately complex systems, are required. Knowledge of interactive systems, organizational IT infrastructure, and IT strategy will be important. You must be able to independently maintain systems and develop innovative solutions to resolve a wide range of issues. Additionally, proficiency in designing and implementing enterprise-level information systems, knowledge of cybersecurity best practices, and understanding of cloud infrastructure and data storage management will be advantageous.
